Weekly Blessings

The last few days have been full of sunshine and slightly warmer temperatures. It's a gift for us southern folk--our winters tend to be very wet, grey and dismal. And while I know the next month will bring routine winter days, I'm giving thanks for that steady stream of light coming through the windows!

Anyway, I've been thinking about all the things I'm thankful for this week, and I may make this a weekly reflection post. We'll see.

1) I'm thankful for a last minute date night. My mom came down to watch the kids for a couple hours so we could go out for dinner. It was just for a couple of hours, but we talked and ate until our tummy's were stuffed. It was perfect, and a much needed time for the two of us. ;)

2) I'm thankful for my morning cup of happy. I've been drinking a homemade peppermint mocha every morning for the last two months. And it makes getting up early worth it.

3) New scentsy wax melts! Actually, I bought them last fall, but just now got around to using them. It's called Bonfire Beach and makes the house smell extra homey. Josh also got me a new candle that I'm dying to burn!

4) New kitchen cleaner. I bought a new lemon scented kitchen spray bottle. It's smells so good, and the packaging is beautiful. I'm a bit nerdy like that. ;)

5) Getting a package delivered to my front door. It's a remake of a vintage alphabet poster. I plan on putting it in the girls school room for next year. Yes, I'm a head of the game. But, I've always been like that. ;)

Happy Homemaker Monday Vol. 25

The weather...
It's sunny, and cool. We are supposed to have a "teaser" week of spring temperatures, so I'm excited. :)

Finishing up my iced coffee, and gearing up for a busy day with the girls.

About our fun weekend, pictures that need to be edited, and about blogs that I need to catch up on!

The Crown

What I'm Reading...

I'm working on a stack of books for quiet time that include The Power of a Praying Wife & The Power of  a Praying Parent. I need to find a new fictional book to add to my stack, too. What have you been reading lately?

On the menu for this week...

Savory Chili
Chicken, French Green Beans and Sweet Potato Bake
Pesto & Salad
Breakfast For Dinner

On my to do list...

Speed clean
Wash Towels
Vacuum
Work on baby albums

One of my simple pleasures...
Turning on my Scentsy burner first thing in the morning. Makes my day feel put together. ;)

A Vintage Party

Our littlest princess turned one this month, so we celebrated with cupcakes and vintage vibes for our sweet girl. It is just crazy to me that an entire year has passed. How quickly it all goes (I know...I say that at least once a week...)

She was quite a fan of the cupcakes. I'll probably find cupcake remnants for weeks on end. That's okay. It was worth it for the memories and scrapbooks.

She's a mess! But, a very cute mess at that. :)

My Top 5 Favorite Chick Flicks

Last Sunday, I was feeling a bit blue (January always does that to me) and decided to watch one of my favorite chick flicks: Sleepless in Seattle. Honestly, I think this is Hank's best movie. He plays the part to perfection. The only movie that comes close is...

You've Got Mail...what's not to love? Books, coffee, romance, and fall scenes from New York. It's pretty perfect. I also love that this movie is so quotable.

While You Were Sleeping...I just love Sandra Bullock. I think she's at her finest in this movie. And her character is probably one of my favorite movie characters of all time. Also, the scene above is my favorite part of the entire movie.

It's so rare to find "newer" chick flicks that I actually adore, but About Time lands at the list of my "top five" chick flicks. "My hair? It's not too brown?" So stinking quotable.

And last, but not lest...The Holiday. A sweet Christmas romance with scenes from England? With some good 'ol Jack Black humor. Well, its just perfect.

So, what is your list of favorite chick flicks?

What I've Been Reading Lately

So far, I've read four books this year. Quite a feat, considering I rarely get the chance to read anymore. But, with January came a cleared off schedule and lots of down time thanks to snow days, and cold temperatures.

I've read four very different novels this month, and I thought I would share them today...

Friends Forever by Danielle Steele (Not pictured): This book was interesting. It follows the lives of five friends who attend the same school. The story begins as they enter kindergarten following them through Junior High, then High School, and then of course as they disperse ways whether it's for college or pursuing career goals. The friends are tight. They cry together, laugh together, and fight together. But, neither of them realize how quickly and abruptly their lives will change over the course of a few years. SPOILER ALERT: As each character dies off (tragically and abruptly), we are left with two at the end of the story, who, inevitably fall in love with each other. I confess, I did NOT see that ending coming.

Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng: This was hands down the most depressing book I've ever read. The only redeeming quality was the ending, where forgiveness and new beginnings take place. The story follows the Lee family. They are a Chinese American family living in the 1970's. The mother, Marilyn, is an incredibly controlling and selfish character. We see flash backs to early on in their marriage when she abruptly leaves her husband and children without so much as a goodbye. The father is so consumed with fitting in and being accepted that he sacrifices his wedding vows. Each of the children are a mess: Lydia of course is dead. She was the favored daughter, and now her parents don't have anything to live for. The son is consumed with thoughts of leaving and starting is own life. And their youngest, feels as if she is nothing more than a shadow of her sister. With depressing detail, the story unfolds first hiding under the false pretense that this is a murder mystery. It's not, but I'll just leave it at that.

The Princess by Lori Wick: I read this years ago when I was a teenager. I found a copy at a local library sale, so I thought I would read it again. It's a simple and sweet tale. We follow Shelby, a young woman committed to her faith and her family. She makes an impression on a friend of the King, and is asked to marry their son Prince Nikolai on the grounds of an arranged marriage. The prince still suffering the loss of his first wife, has no interest in being a husband. But, duty calls, and a princess must be found to help keep the royal family functioning according to laws. As fairy tales would have it, a sweet lovely story unfolds.

The Mistress of Tall Acre by Laura Frantz: In true Frantz fashion, we are met with a story of triumph and tragedy as we follow the story of Sophie Menzies. Her family seen as an embarrassment to the community (her father was a sympathizer), and her mother has long been gone. She tries to keep her family's estate running on her own while rebuilding her reputation. Her neighbor, General Ogilvy is considered a war hero and a gentlemen. An unlikely friendship blossoms soon followed by tragedy, mystery and love.

Happy Homemaker Monday Vol. 24

The weather...
It's sunny, and very cold. The snow still hasn't melted!

Right now I am...

Blogging, drinking coffee, and listening to Peppa Pig in the background (it's part of the girls morning routine)

Thinking...

That this morning got off to a busy, but good start. Laundry is already going, the kitchen is clean, and I had my quiet time.

On my TV...

Poldark! I just started watching it over the weekend. It's already quite intriguing, and the cinematography is fantastic. I think it just may fill up the Downton Abby sized hole in my heart. Sorry for the dramatics. Hehe!

We also watched the new Jason Boune over the weekend. It did not disappoint! We also watched Sleepless in Seattle which is just as good the third or fourth time around as it was the first time! Such a perfect movie.

What I'm Reading...

I just started reading "Everything I Never Told You", and quite honestly, I'm not enjoying it. It's a bit too morbid, and cold of a novel for my taste buds. I have also started my stack of quiet time books that I am hoping to work on over the course of the year.

On the menu for this week...

Ham, Sweet Potatoes and Cornbread Dressing
Italian Chicken and Wild Rice
Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup
Black Bean Taco Salad

On my to do list...

Speed clean
Fold Laundry
Make beds, tidy bedrooms, etc.
Work on baby books
Order photo prints

One of my simple pleasures...
Lighting a candle, sipping coffee reading or browsing pinterest. ;)

Winter Wonderland

We woke up to a winter wonderland this morning! Being from the south, it's a rare thing to witness. So, I like to do all the cliche things. You know...drink coffee, eat chili, read books, binge watch tV, and take obligatory snow pictures. The girls lasted about five minutes in the cold! Evie loved is, and Ella wasn't too sure...but she eventually gave us a few giggles. These girls are a MESS, but they sure do keep our life full and entertaining. Thankful for my little family. Happy Friday!

Good Good Father (Children's Book Giveaway)

As Evie Grace gets older, I've noticed two things: she loves spending quality time with me and she is learning to enjoy books more. She loves to look at pictures, point to different aspects of each picture (and tries to figure out what it is), and she really enjoys learning. This gives me a perfect avenue to teach her about our Heavenly Father.

With that in mind, I was happy to add "Good Good Father" to my collection of books for our kids. I love that it intentionally reminds us (yes, even us the reader!) that God is good. That He is a good Father. That He cares for us, and loves us deeply.

The illustrations are beautiful, and unique. Not quite like any book that I've collected before. I really enjoyed them.

Good Good Father was inspired by the #1 hit worship song by Chis Tomlin. Here's a video of the song if you are interested:

Would you like to win a copy? Let me know who you would like to share this book with in the comments below. Also, please check out my Instagram & Facebook posts on this book. Void where prohibited. Contest ends at noon on 1/6/17 :)

A Year Ago Today

After a month of bed rest (two weeks moderate bed rest and two weeks of strict bed rest), pre-term labor, and two overnight stays...this little girl finally had her away and arrived early. She was the tiniest little thing.

How is it that she's turns a year old today? I just can't handle it.

Happy birthday, Ella bug! You are the sweetest little thing. We love you to the moon and back. <3

A Series For The Foodie at Heart

Each novel of the Two Blue Doors series held me captive via savory recipes and well written character development.

Juliette is no stranger to pain. After career set backs, the death of her grandmother, and her own mother's failing health, Juliette is on the verge of a breakdown. Her own love life is in shambles after she splits with her serious boyfriend.

She finds solace through her family, her friends, and her recipes. She also unlocks family secrets that could threaten her peace...or will it provide healing?

I was enraptured by the detailed family dinners, the recipes sprinkled throughout the book and the mystery surrounding her grandmother's love life. As Juliette travels throughout each novel, we are given glimpses of culture and landmarks. It's sure to please both foodies and travel queens alike!

I loved Together At the Table, and found the ending to be satisfactory, albeit bittersweet. Many thanks to Blogging For Books for my copy! All opinions are my own.

My Blog Has Moved....

I have officially moved my blog.... https://thekindredschoolroom.blogspot.com Hope you join me there!! ~Heather
